What is Granite?

Granite is a natural stone that forms when magma cools and crystallises very slowly deep within the earth's crust. It consists mainly of quartz, feldspar and mica, which gives it its characteristic speckled grain. This makes granite much harder and less porous than limestone or marble.

Note: what is often called "Belgian granite" or petit granit is not true granite but Belgian bluestone, a limestone.

Maintenance and Price

• Maintenance: Granite is very easy to maintain; regular cleaning with pH-neutral products is enough to keep the stone in top condition. Light, more porous granites are best impregnated, especially as a kitchen worktop.
